Emily Pohl-Weary, Artistic Director
Live readings by numerous authors and recordings
More than twenty of Toronto's literary stars and provocateurs read their favourite bedtime stories at the Toronto Heliconian Club for Nuit Blanche. Under the artistic direction of author Emily Pohl-Weary, the literary fantasy delights, entertains, and heats up the wee hours.
Programmed for 15-20 minutes each, and matched with hosts to engage the audience, emerging and established authors share tales of the night that range from science fiction and erotica to ghost stories and fairy tales.
Each reader starts on the half-hour. The audience is offered hot cocoa and homemade cookies and invited to stretch out beneath the vaulted ceiling. Performance artist, Sally McKay, operating as the big-haired, carnivalesque Automatonic Bedtime Fortune Story Teller, will dispense twosentence bedtime stories from her Dream Time Story Booth when clients push the big red button. The noises of a city night, recorded for the occasion, set the mood.
Award-winning author Emily Pohl-Weary is particularly known for her anthology Girls Who Bite Back: Witches, Mutants, Slayers and Freaks (2004) and is the editor and publisher of Kiss Machine. Her first in a young adult mystery series, Strange Times at Western High, is being released this fall by Annick Press.
